Food is Fuel

Have you ever bitten into a ripe, sweet, juicy peach and considered what this treat is doing for your body? I use a peach as an example because it is my absolute favorite fruit. Truly God’s gift to us! And you can’t just eat any peach. If you are able, getting peaches from a local farm, or even picking them fresh will change your life! So good! Get them in bulk, wait until they are the perfect ripeness and slice them and freeze them. The sad part about peaches is that they have a short season. In the winter months, you can opt for canned with no sugar added/no artificial flavors or sugar added, and make sure they are unpeeled. Frozen peaches are also a great option. I will link a few of my favorite peach farms below. Back to the “food is medicine” point of this blog post! Peaches pack a big punch with many vitamins, minerals and antioxidant power. They offer vitamins c, a, e, and k, potassium, and fiber. They aide in digestion, improve heart health, protect your skin, and boost your immunity. When we stop and think about what just a simple peach does for our bodies, doesn’t it make you want to add it to your grocery list?! What if we discovered what all the other fruits and vegetables did for our bodies and starting consuming those in large amounts? We would be fueling our bodies to allow them to function properly and feel great when performing our daily activities. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains (yes, I said you NEED carbs!), nuts and seeds will set your body up to be ready to attack when sickness knocks on the door, will give you energy you need to carry out your favorite tasks, and will simply make you happy, because they are delicious. Don’t know where to start? Begin thinking about some fruits and vegetables you like or have liked in the past. Go purchase a few and take a simple step: When you get that pang of hunger in the afternoon, instead of grabbing a processed snack, grab a peach; or, grab an apple, orange, or a cucumber and hummus. You will feel great, get a boost of energy and will be fueling your body to do great things!
